The Royal House of the Post Office (Spanish: Real Casa de Correos) is an iconic and historically significant building located in the very heart of Madrid, at Puerta del Sol. It is arguably one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city.

  • Architecture and Design: Designed by the French architect Jacques Marquet, construction of the building began in the 1760s and was completed in 1768 during the reign of King Charles III. It is a striking example of Neoclassical architecture, characterized by its elegant, symmetrical white stone and brick facade. The building has a rectangular floor plan with two large interior patios. Sculptural details by Antonio Primo adorn the structure.
  • The Clock Tower: A prominent feature of the Royal House of the Post Office is its central clock tower, which was added in the 19th century and inaugurated in 1866 by Queen Isabel II. This clock is famous throughout Spain, as its chimes traditionally mark the eating of the “Twelve Grapes” and the beginning of the New Year, a nationwide televised event.
  • Kilometer Zero: Directly in front of the building’s main entrance, on the ground, is a plaque marking “Kilometer Zero” (Km 0). This point is the official starting point for all of Spain’s radial national roads and also where Madrid’s street numbering begins.
  • Historical Significance: The Real Casa de Correos has witnessed numerous pivotal moments in Spanish history. It originally served as the central post office for Madrid, as its name suggests. Over the centuries, it has housed various government entities, including the Ministry of Interior and State Security during the Francoist era, with its basement gaining infamy as a place where dissidents were subjected to torture. It has been central to popular revolts, the War of Independence, and the proclamation of the Second Republic.
  • Current Use: Today, the Royal House of the Post Office serves as the official seat of the Presidency of the Community of Madrid, the head of the regional government of the Autonomous Community of Madrid. It is a symbol of regional political power and continues to host important official events.
  • Location: Its prime location in Puerta del Sol makes it a focal point of activity in Madrid, a bustling square that is a hub for both locals and tourists.

While not regularly open to the public for tours, its exterior and historical significance make it a must-see for anyone visiting Madrid.
