“Dona i Ocell” (Woman and Bird) is a monumental sculpture by the renowned Catalan artist Joan Miró, prominently located in the Parc de Joan Miró in Barcelona, Spain. Standing at an impressive 22 meters (72 feet) high, it is one of Miró’s last major public works, inaugurated in 1983 shortly before his death.
The sculpture is characterized by its distinct, somewhat phallic form, a recurring motif in Miró’s art, and is richly decorated with a mosaic of vibrant ceramic tiles. These tiles, applied by Miró’s collaborator Joan Gardy Artigas, feature the artist’s signature palette of primary colors—reds, yellows, blues, and black—reflecting the Mediterranean landscape and his iconic style.
While its shape has often been interpreted as phallic, a significant vertical incision or “vulva-shaped split” lined with blackish tiles on one side clearly alludes to femininity. Miró frequently used the themes of women and birds in his work, and “Dona i Ocell” is seen as a representation of this connection, linking the earthly world with the celestial. The Catalan word for “bird” (ocell) can also be used as slang for penis, adding another layer of interpretation to the work.
The sculpture rises from an artificial lake within the park, creating a striking visual against the open sky and reflecting its vibrant colors. It was part of a trilogy of works commissioned from Miró to welcome visitors to Barcelona, embodying the city’s embrace of modern art and its entry into a new democratic era. “Dona i Ocell” remains an iconic landmark, inviting diverse interpretations and serving as a testament to Miró’s unique artistic vision.
