The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Spain, officially known as the Palacio de Fomento (Palace of Development), is a significant historical and architectural landmark located in Madrid, opposite the Atocha railway station.
- Architectural Style and Design: Designed by Ricardo Velázquez Bosco, the building was completed in 1897. It is a grand example of neoclassical architecture, characterized by its symmetrical facade, monumental scale, and classical elements.
- Facade: The most prominent feature is its main façade, which is richly decorated. It boasts a central portico supported by majestic columns, giving it an imposing presence. The building’s white stone exterior is complemented by contrasting elements, such as the red-framed windows on the lower levels, which add visual interest.
- Rooftop Sculptures: A defining characteristic of the building is the impressive statuary on its rooftop. Originally, these included marble sculptures by Agustí Querol Subirats, titled “La Gloria y los Pegasos” (Glory and the Pegasi). Due to damage over time, these were replaced by bronze replicas in 1976, maintaining the building’s iconic silhouette. These sculptures often depict allegorical figures representing industry, commerce, and other relevant themes.
- Decorative Elements: The facade also features intricate decoration on tiles and enamelwork by Daniel Zuloaga, and paintings by Ferrant. There are also large traditional caryatides (columns sculpted as female figures) representing industry and commerce, further enhancing the classical aesthetic.
- Layout: The building has a rectangular area set back in two interior courtyards of equal proportions, which are covered with iron and crystal, allowing natural light into the inner spaces.
- Heritage Status: In 1989, the Palacio de Fomento was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Property of Cultural Interest) in the category of Monuments, underscoring its historical and artistic importance.
- Current Use and Name: While originally built for the Ministry of Development, the building has served as the seat of the Ministry of Agriculture for most of its existence. The words “Ministerio de Agricultura” are prominently displayed on a cartouche on the facade, reflecting its primary occupant and current name, which includes Fisheries and Food in its full title.
In essence, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food building is a magnificent example of 19th-century Spanish architecture, combining classical grandeur with intricate detailing, and standing as a significant symbol of Madrid’s rich history and governmental functions.
