Madrid is home for two significant rose gardens, each offering a unique experience for visitors:

1. La Rosaleda del Retiro (Rose Garden of Retiro Park): Located within the famous El Retiro Park, this beautiful rose garden was designed by Cecilio Rodríguez in 1915, inspired by European rose gardens like the one in Bois de Boulogne in Paris. It’s an elliptical, symmetrical garden featuring a central stone pool, romantic fountains with cherubs, and metallic pergolas covered in climbing roses.

The garden was unfortunately destroyed during the Spanish Civil War but was replanted in 1941 with 4,000 rose bushes. After a complete restoration between 2001 and 2006, it now boasts 5,570 rose bushes across 130 different species of both low and climbing varieties. The roses typically bloom most spectacularly in May and June, transforming the garden into a riot of colors and fragrances. La Rosaleda del Retiro is part of the “Paisaje de la Luz” (Landscape of Light), which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2021. It’s a peaceful oasis within the bustling park, perfect for leisurely strolls and photography.

2. Rosaleda del Parque del Oeste (Rose Garden of Oeste Park): Situated in the Parque del Oeste (West Park), this rose garden was created in 1955 by Ramón Ortiz, Madrid City Council’s head gardener. It’s a larger garden, spanning 32,000 square meters, and features around 20,000 specimens of 650 different varieties of modern rose bushes, including ramblers, weeping varieties, and more. It also includes various ponds that add to its scenic beauty.

The Rosaleda del Parque del Oeste is particularly renowned for hosting an annual International Competition for New Roses, which has been held since 1956, attracting rose growers and enthusiasts from around the world. In 2006, it received the “Garden Excellence Award” from the World Federation of Rose Societies, recognizing it as one of the exceptional rose gardens globally. This garden offers a more formal style of planting compared to the Retiro’s rose garden.

Both rose gardens are free to enter and provide a delightful escape into nature, showcasing a vast array of rose varieties and offering serene settings for relaxation and appreciation of floral beauty.
