History and Purpose:

  • Original Function: It was originally built between 1907 and 1919 by architects Antonio Palacios and Joaquín Otamendi to serve as the headquarters for the Spanish Post Office and Telegraph and Telephone services. It was even nicknamed the “Cathedral of Communications” due to its impressive scale and function.
  • Current Function: Since 2007, it has served as the Madrid City Hall (Ayuntamiento de Madrid). It also houses CentroCentro, a vibrant public cultural center dedicated to contemporary art and a wide range of cultural activities.

Architecture and Design:

  • Style: The palace exhibits an eclectic architectural style, blending elements of Neo-Plateresque, Modernismo, and Baroque influences. It’s one of the first and most representative examples of Modernismo in central Madrid.
  • Materials: It’s constructed from stone, iron, and glass, showcasing a blend of traditional and modern materials for its time.
  • Facade: The intricate white facade is highly ornate, featuring decorative towers, numerous windows, and detailed sculptural elements.
  • Towers: Its prominent towers, particularly the main tower, contribute to its grand and majestic appearance.

Notable Features and Public Access:

  • Mirador Madrid: Located in the palace’s main tower, this observation deck offers breathtaking panoramic views of Madrid’s skyline, including the Plaza de Cibeles, Gran Vía, and parts of Retiro Park.
  • Glass Gallery: A spectacular 2,800 square meter multi-purpose space covered by a striking glass dome, often used for events and exhibitions.
  • CentroCentro Cultural Center: Spanning multiple floors, this cultural hub hosts a diverse program of contemporary art exhibitions, workshops, conferences, and other events.
