The Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile, commonly known as the Arc de Triomphe, is one of Paris, France’s most famous and iconic monuments. It stands majestically at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, at the center of Place Charles de Gaulle (formerly known as Place de l’Étoile due to the twelve avenues that radiate from it, forming a star shape).
-
Commissioned by Napoleon: The arch was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon I in 1806 after his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz to honor the French army and its military triumphs. Although begun in 1806, it wasn’t completed until 1836, long after Napoleon’s downfall.
-
Architectural Design: Designed by Jean Chalgrin, the Arc de Triomphe is a neoclassical take on ancient Roman triumphal arches, inspired by monuments like the Arch of Titus in Rome. However, it’s significantly larger, standing at 50 meters (164 ft) tall, 45 meters (148 ft) wide, and 22 meters (72 ft) deep.
-
Sculptural Details: The monument is adorned with intricate high-relief sculptures on its four pedestals, celebrating key military victories of the French Revolution and the First Empire. The most famous of these is François Rude’s “Departure of the Volunteers of 1792,” also known as “La Marseillaise,” which depicts soldiers departing for war. Other sculptures include “The Triumph of 1810” by Jean-Pierre Cortot and “Resistance of 1814” and “Peace of 1815” by Antoine Étex. The names of French victories and generals are also inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces, with underlined names indicating those who died in battle.
-
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier: Beneath its central arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I. An eternal flame, first lit in 1923, burns continuously as a tribute to all unidentified French soldiers who died in battle. This flame is rekindled every evening at 6:30 PM in a poignant ceremony.
-
Symbolic Importance: Beyond its architectural grandeur, the Arc de Triomphe serves as a powerful symbol of French national identity, pride, and remembrance. It has been a rallying point for French troops after successful military campaigns and is the starting point for the annual Bastille Day military parade on July 14th. Major national commemorations, particularly on November 11th (Armistice Day), are held here.
-
Panoramic Views: Visitors can climb to the top of the arch (either via 284 steps or an elevator partway up, followed by steps) to access an observation deck. From this vantage point, there are breathtaking panoramic views of Paris, including the Champs-Élysées, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the modern La Défense district. There’s also a small museum inside the arch, detailing its history and symbolic importance.
The Arc de Triomphe is not just a historical monument; it’s a living part of Parisian life and a must-see for anyone visiting the city, offering a deep connection to French history and a stunning perspective of the capital.
